After seed has been harvested and delivered to the warehouse it will
be processed and assigned a lot number. A sample of that lot is
tested at a seed lab to determine purity and germination.
A sack of seed contains inert material such as dust, chafe, and
empty seed; weed and other crop seed; and pure live seed (pls). So
that the customer only pays for the actual pure seed a formula has
been created to figure pure live seed. Multiply the purity
percentage by the germination percentage plus dormant seed of a seed
lot and this is the pure live seed percentage. Multiply the pure
live seed percentage by the bulk weight of the sack to determine the
amount of pure live seed.
Our invoices identify the bulk pounds, pls pounds, kind of seed,
variety, pure seed, total germ, pls, price and amount.
Grass seed is usually sold by pls pounds. Field seed is sold by bulk
pounds. Wildflower seed, turf seed, and wildlife seed are usually
sold by bulk pounds, but in some cases are sold by pls.
Ex.
Customer orders 40 pls of seed with a 95.40pls @$6.00/pls lb.
Total bulk pounds = 95.40÷40 = 42
Total price 40 x $6.00 = $240.00
The customer pays for 40pls lbs. but receives 42 bulk lbs. to insure
they get 100% of the 40 pounds. |
