For non-sandy soils we think the common annual sunflower (native sunflower) is the best food plot for dove. Plant in the fall or early winter. Planting during the cool season will help break the natural dormancy of the sunflower seed which typically sprout in the spring. The wheat and the rape seed provide a cool season cover crop for the sunflower as well as some spring/summer seed for birds. Once the sunflowers have set seed, usually summer or early fall, and prior to dove season, most of our customers mow strips through the food plot to provide landing lanes and make seed readily available for the birds. Native sunflowers are prolific reseeding annuals and as such it is not uncommon to establish a self-perpetuating food plot. Plowing or lightly disturbing the food plot at the end of the season, and thereby replanting all the seed that has dropped, can help this process.
