River Oats or inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium) is a warm-season, perennial native grass found throughout the Eastern and Central United States. Growing 2–4 feet tall, it features broad green foliage that turns coppery-bronze in the fall, along with distinctive drooping seed heads that shift from green to purplish-bronze. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils but is adaptable to clay, preferring partial shade to full shade and slightly acidic to neutral pH. While it offers low to moderate grazing value, it is highly beneficial for wildlife, providing seed for birds and cover for small animals. River Oats is also prized for its ornamental appeal, erosion control, and use in shade gardens, with seed heads commonly used in dried arrangements.
