Iron Master Bluestem is a USDA-developed selection released in 1987 from Woodward, Oklahoma, for improved forage performance and adaptation to challenging soils. It is similar in adaptation to Plains and Spar Bluestem but offers key advantages in leaf production and soil tolerance.

Iron Master is distinguished by its high leaf-to-stem ratio, producing abundant leafy growth that improves forage quality and palatability. It is later maturing than Spar and produces more and larger stem leaves, though this comes at the expense of reduced seedhead production. Compared to related types, it has shown improved cold tolerance and reduced winterkill under harsh conditions.

This bluestem is especially well adapted to high pH, calcareous soils and areas prone to iron chlorosis, where other bluestems may struggle. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soils with a pH of 6.0 and above.

Iron Master Bluestem is well suited for grazing, hay production, erosion control, and use in both pure stands as well as in mixes.
